I posted this graphic in our "Hope After Breast Cancer" private Facebook group last night. I was curious about what our women had gone through besides breast cancer.
The 71 replies were harder to read than I anticipated.
Death of a child.
Death of a spouse.
Death of a parent.
Death of a loved one.
Such horrible, unimaginable things they've gone through. And now cancer. Maybe not even for the first time.
But then I realized something.
Every one of us has a very, very long list of "hard things" that have happened in our lives.
Were those things painful? Absolutely YES.
Do we wish they'd never happened? ABSOLUTELY YES.
Did we survive them? YES.
We're built to be resilient.
We're hard-wired to survive.
We have a high tolerance to what happens in life.
Here's what I know about you.
You have a HISTORY of getting through "hard things."
I don't want to minimize cancer in our lives. It sucks. BIG time.
But to me, cancer isn't much different than any of those other "hard things" I've had to deal with in my life. It's another thing to get through. I'm just adding it to the list and moving along. Living life.
How about you?
Do you have cancer in its proper perspective in your life?
Or have you made cancer "bigger" in your life than it should be?
