Financial Abuse - The Invisible Weapon of Domestic Violence

One in four women experience domestic abuse.

One in eight women experience breast cancer.

When those two situations collide, unfathomable stress is created.

99% of women who experience domestic abuse also experience financial abuse. All abuse is about power and control. Financial abuse can come in many forms including:

  • controlling access to shared finances and assets
  • using assets without asking
  • interfering with your job
  • ruining credit history by running up credit card charges without permission
  • intercepting financial records
  • demanding paychecks, passwords, credit cards

I recently spoke with a Pink Sister who is going through active treatment. Her abusive husband is threatening to end her health insurance coverage. She is, needless to say, paralyzed with fear. If he follows through with his threats, how would she be able to manage hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills?

Women Who Money has compiled some solid suggestions to get your financial house in order if you are experiencing financial abuse. Please see this link or Google other information to become educated and protect yourself.

If you are in an abusive situation, please seek counsel through domestic violence organizations, churches, and other local organizations. If you do not have a counselor or religious leader who can help, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 for confidential assistance from trained advocates. The key is to address financial abuse right away. Keep yourself safe.
