To My Sisters Who Never Bore Children
Happy Mother's Day to all!
This is a special encouragement to those sisters who, like me, never had the privilege of bearing a child biologically. Some of us have a hole in that place, and I remember that several years ago, my hole was gigantic. Then I got some very specific encouragement through a Bible study I was doing.
The Bible study leader suggested that we think of all the women who had gone before us who had mentored us, encouraged us, challenged us, loved us. She said those were all of our “Spiritual Mothers.”
And then we were asked to think of all the women who had come after us who WE had mentored, encouraged, challenged, loved. She said those should be considered all of our “Spiritual Children!”
Both of my lists were lengthy, and that was so encouraging. But then the leader blew me away by tying it into Isaiah 54:1-3 (emphasis mine):
1 "Sing, O barren woman,
you who never bore a child;
burst into song, shout for joy,
you who were never in labor;
because more are the children of the desolate woman
than of her who has a husband,"
says the LORD.
2 "Enlarge the place of your tent,
stretch your tent curtains wide,
do not hold back;
lengthen your cords,
strengthen your stakes.
3 For you will spread out to the right and to the left;
your descendants will dispossess nations
and settle in their desolate cities.
So girls, let's "enlarge the place of our tents" and make room for MORE Spiritual Children! As Spiritual Mamas, we actually have the ability to have MORE kids than those sisters who have actually borne children! The impact we can have on the world is immeasurable!
