The Power of a Kind Word

From Guest Contributor Lesley Rabb

To the beautiful soul who complimented my hair this morning at the Safeway on Houghton, I want to tell you again just how much that meant.

You didn’t know, when you made your compliment, just how much those few words would mean to me. You didn’t know that while trying to style my hair this morning, I cried in frustration because I’m just not used to having short curly hair and I don’t know what to do with it. You didn’t know that I slammed my bottle of hair stuff down and walked away in defeat, aggravated that it wouldn’t stop sticking up. You didn’t know that I went to the store early to get the shopping done, when it was slow, so no one judged me. (Really, I KNOW no one cares but when you feel like this, it’s hard and messes with your mind.) You didn’t know that every day I really, really miss my long hair and I hate that I lost my hair to cancer. You didn’t know that I struggle daily looking at myself in the mirror because I don’t even recognize myself anymore.

Your genuine, sweet compliment about how adorable my hair is, totally made my day, and I thank you for it.

Learning to live life after cancer has its own set of challenges but learning to embrace my new hair has been the biggest challenge of all. You made the fog clear up just a bit. I hope this reaches you and you can see by just being the kind-hearted soul you are, that you put a little bit of a skip in my step today. I wish I wasn’t so shocked by the compliment and was in the right frame of mind because I would have bought you a coffee. Thank you for being such a beautiful human! If this finds you, please message me. I’d like to buy you a coffee and give you a hug. I promise I won’t cry this time.

I hope you have a wonderful day—you deserve so much good!
